6th BRAIN DAY: Looking over the shoulders of neuroscientists

Over 300 visitors came to the RUB’s conference centre for the 6th annual BRAIN DAY on September 14th. Collaborative Research Centre 874 had invited the public to a colourful programme with lectures, information stands, and various activities that gave a rare insight into neuroscientific research.

Talks on Proteome research, serotonin and eating disorders

Four speakers gave fascinating talks on their areas of expertise. In Dr. Caroline May’s lecture guests learned about the work of the Medizinisches Proteom Center and how it contributes to the research on Parkinson’s disease. Does serotonin make us happy? Juniorprofessor Dr. Olivia Masseck spoke about her fundamental research in this area. PD Dr. Burkhard Pleger showed the audience his recent studies on the causes of obesity, while Prof. Dr. Boris Suchan explained how anorexia nervosa patients come to have a wrong bodily perception.

Self-help & circuit course for the senses

Between lectures the guests had time to explore the supporting programme. The attending patient representative groups were happy to see the great interest that visitors expressed in their work and were glad to answer all questions. In their sensory parkour sports scientists showed what our senses are capable of. Whether it was keeping your balance in a rowing boat, or on a tightrope, maintaining coordination while juggling, or throwing a basketball while wearing high-tech sports glasses – BRAIN DAY guests were eager to try it all and receive a competent scientific analysis from the professionals.

Microscopy, hearing aids, stress research, and brain waves

Together with members of the Institute for Anatomy, it was possible to view the brain under a microscope. The researchers also used models to explain the architecture of the central nervous system. Visitors heard for themselves how hearing aids work and learned more about this technology from staff of the Institute of Communication Acoustics. Cognitive Psychologists showed their eye-tracking devices and explained their research on stress. The Neural Plasticity Lab let the visitors see their own brain at work using electroencephalography.
