IN MEMORIAM:Professor Patrik Krieger

We mourn the loss of our colleague, Professor Patrik Krieger, who was head of the Department of Systems Neuroscience within the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum. Professor Krieger passed away on March 14th 2022, following a prolonged illness.

Professor Krieger joined the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University in 2012. He had previously obtained a BSc degree in Chemistry from the University of Stockholm and a PhD in Neuroscience from the Karolinska Institute. His PhD project supervisor was the Kavli prize winner, Professor Sten Grillner. After having  worked as a postdoctoral scientist with the Nobel prize winner, Professor Bert Sakmann, at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, he returned to the Karolinska Institute  to work as an associate professor before his appointment as Professor  of Systems Neuroscience at the Ruhr University Bochum.

His research focused on neurophysiological  and neurobiological investigations,  as well as computational modelling of cortical-subcortical interactions relating to somatosensation. This multidisciplinary approach led to close interactions, not only within the Medical Faculty, including with neuroscientists within its University clinics, but also with colleagues in the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, and  the Institute for Neural Computation. Professor Krieger was also a member of the collaborative research consortium, ‘SFB 874’, the International Graduate School of Biosciences, and the International Graduate School of Neuroscience.

He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family, to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
