PAINTING COMPETITION:Bochum primary school pupils paint the brain of the future

IGSN and SFB 874 honour winners of the 2022 painting competition – exhibition of all works in the University Library from 21 November to 2 December

Buttons and computer chips, hundreds of zeros and ones and lots of colours. ” Today, tomorrow, beyond tomorrow – The brain of the future.” was the motto of this year’s primary school painting competition of the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN) and the Collaborative Research Centre 874 (SFB 874) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. More than 220 pupils responded to the call and captured their answers to the question “What will our brain be able to do in 100,000 years?” in bright colours on paper. All the submitted works will be on display in an exhibition in the university library at the Ruhr -Universität Bochum from 21 November to 2 December.

I was completely overwhelmed by the mass of submissions. When I first looked at the pictures, it was immediately obvious… the children were really into the subject and let themselves be inspired.

Ursula Heiler, Public Relations SFB 874 and Coordinator of the IGSN

This year, the jury had a total of ten boards at its disposal – both sides covered with brightly coloured pictures. The selection of the winning pictures was in the hands of a jury of scientists from the IGSN – and with 220 pictures, it took several hours to find the winning pictures.

Who was the winner? This will be revealed in an exhibition on the competition. Currently, all 220 submitted works are being staged in the university library of the Ruhr-Universität. From 21 November to 2 December, they can be admired by anyone interested on the first and second floors.

We are pleased to be able to set the stage for the pictures of the IGSN painting competition again this year. The artists of today are the students and thus our customers of tomorrow.

Gisela Ogasa, Event Manager of the University Library

As far as the course of the Corona pandemic allows, all winners will be invited to an award ceremony at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum on 2 December 2022, where they will be part of the IGSN Graduation Day, during which doctoral degrees will be awarded to all IGSN-graduates.

The painting competition was organised by the Collaborative Research Centre 874, which has been researching sensory perception and memory formation at the Ruhr-Universität since 2010. All pupils in classes 3 and 4 at Bochum primary schools were allowed to take part.

The university library is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 9 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 7 pm.
