Project B12 (Masseck)

Mechanisms underlying changes in hippocampal information processing by neuromodulation

Summary

Our project scrutinises how serotonergic neuromodulation impacts hippocampal information processing. We investigate to what extent serotonergic input controls excitation/inhibition balance within the hippocampus, in a state-dependent manner, and how this contributes to subcortical and hippocampal information processing. Serotonergic neuromodulation is examined on several levels: behavioural experiments in conjunction with optogenetics will elucidate the impact of 5-HT on memory and sensory information processing, whereas electrophysiological recordings in combination with state-of-the-art imaging techniques will reveal the underlying mechanisms.
