Shaping of object representations by cognitive and emotional factors

Summary

We test the hypothesis that generalisation of stimulus representations is a basic neural mechanism underlying two fundamental cognitive functions: spatial navigation and categorisation learning. Using 3T and 7T fMRI, we investigate (1) whether grid cell-like representations in entorhinal cortex enable path integration by providing a generalised metric of spatial distances, and (2) whether categorisation learning can be explained by generalisation of exemplar representations from each category.
